God’s Children, the debut solo exhibition of British photographer and creative director Andrew Egan, presents two discrete bodies of photographs that posit a holistic approach to inclusivity.

In the series 22:1, Egan captures composed and incidental occurrences of faith; bound pieces of wood, a lug nut, arranged household nails and bent scraps of metal indwell the boundlessness of the sacred in bare life. For example, in 22.1-5, crushed pieces of overlapping aluminum, spot lit by streaming light, illuminate the fragility, even disposability, of resoluteness, whereas in 22.1-1 the cross’ diagonal cast shadow evokes a procession-in-progress.

The second corpus of photographs is a series of portraits of the LGBTQIA+ community. While shooting portraits of the trans models for the organization Strands for Trans he was introduced to members of The Royal House of LaBeija who invited him to capture images at “ The Hottest Winter Ever Birthday Ball” in Miami in December 2023. The Ball was the latest in a long history of balls that began in 1972 when Crystal LaBeija and Lottie LaBeija, the House’s two founders, sought to provide representation for women of color in the drag circuit. Through their radical and revolutionary efforts, Crystal and Lottie reshaped the history of drag pageantry in New York City. In this series, Egan pairs intimate, behind the scenes documentary images with formal portraits of members of The Royal House of LaBeija, celebrating the House’s legendary contribution to contemporary culture.

Taken as a whole, God’s Children casts an expansive umbrella of inclusivity and omnipresence, shifting margins to the center and undermining society’s normalizing and essentializing attempts to manifest the contrary.
